Telling Your Side of the Story
If you are facing accusations of domestic violence, you may be worried that everyone will assume the accusations are true and that you will not get an opportunity to tell your side of the story. Unfortunately, these cases are not only tried in the courtroom, but also in the court of public opinion. I am here to make sure your side of the story is told and presented in the way the events actually transpired.
I'm criminal defense attorney Nabiel C. Ahmed, and I represent people in Oakland and throughout the Bay Area who have been charged with domestic violence. Contact me today for a free consultation.
Understanding the Penalties You May Be Facing
In California, if you are convicted of committing a violent crime against a current or former spouse, a current or former cohabitant, or someone with whom you have a child, you face strict criminal penalties under the laws against domestic violence. These penalties can include:
- Up to six months in jail for domestic assault (threats of violence)
- Up to a year in jail for simple domestic battery (actual violence)
- Two to four years in jail for domestic battery causing serious bodily injury
The penalties can be even higher if you have previous convictions or are found to have used a weapon. If you have been charged with domestic violence, it is important to hire a lawyer who is prepared to take every opportunity to fight your charges and their potential consequences.
Getting to the Bottom of the Accusations Against You
Domestic violence is one of the most hot-button criminal defense issues. Many of the accusations that are made against people in these cases are one-sided and do not reflect what really happened in the incident in question.
I have the understanding and ability to accurately portray what really happened in your case and then argue why you should be acquitted or not sentenced to jail and left with a criminal record.
In addition to providing criminal defense against domestic violence charges, I also represent clients who have been served with domestic violence restraining orders.
There are many resources out there for people who believe they have suffered domestic violence. My goal, however, is to make sure people who are accused of domestic violence get a fair chance to defend themselves.
